Greensky Bluegrass isn't just a bluegrass band; they're a jam band disguised as one, constantly pushing the boundaries of the genre and leaving audiences breathless in their wake. Born from the fertile Michigan music scene in the early 2000s, the quintet – Anders Beck (dobro), Michael Arlen Bont (banjo), Dave Bruzza (guitar), Mike Devol (upright bass), and Paul Hoffman (mandolin) – initially drew inspiration from bluegrass pioneers like Bill Monroe and the New Grass Revival. But unlike their traditional predecessors, Greensky quickly began incorporating elements of rock, funk, and even electronica into their sound, creating a unique and electrifying blend that defies easy categorization. Their live shows, fueled by improvisation and an almost telepathic connection between the members, are legendary. It's not uncommon for a seemingly straightforward bluegrass tune to morph into a ten-minute psychedelic jam, complete with soaring guitar solos, pulsating bass lines, and mind-bending dobro runs. The release of "Shouted, Written Down & Quoted" in 2016 marked a turning point, showcasing their songwriting prowess alongside their improvisational skills. The album's success further solidified their status as leaders of the "jamgrass" movement, inspiring countless other bands to explore the intersection of bluegrass and improvisation. Now, years into their career, Greensky Bluegrass continue to tour relentlessly and write and record new music.
