About

From the hazy Madchester scene to the Britpop fringes, Inspiral Carpets carved their own paisley-printed path, leaving an indelible mark on British alternative music. More than just purveyors of baggy beats and Hammond organ riffs, they were architects of a uniquely Northern sound, blending psychedelic swirls with working-class grit. Emerging from Oldham in the late 80s, the band quickly distinguished themselves with their swirling organ lines – a sonic signature courtesy of Clint Boon – anchoring infectious melodies and Stephen Holt's distinctly laconic vocals (later replaced by Tom Hingley). Debut album *Life* (1990) cemented their status, spawning indie anthems like "This Is How It Feels" and "She Comes in the Fall." While often lumped in with the Madchester movement, Inspiral Carpets drew equally from 60s garage rock, psychedelic pop, and the darker undercurrents of post-punk. This eclectic palette fueled subsequent albums like *The Beast Inside* and *Revenge of the Goldfish*, showcasing a willingness to experiment and push beyond genre confines. Despite enduring lineup changes and shifting trends, the band's commitment to their sonic vision remained constant. Reunions and recent live performances have proven their enduring appeal, reminding audiences of the power and originality of a band that never quite fit the mold, but always stood out from the crowd. They continue to tour and remind us that the baggy beats are always here.
