Hailing from Newcastle upon Tyne, England, this trio wasn't content to merely play heavy metal; they wanted to tear a hole in the fabric of reality with it. Formed in 1978, Venom eschewed the fantasy themes of their NWOBHM contemporaries, instead embracing a Satanic, blasphemous aesthetic that was as shocking as it was groundbreaking. Their 1981 album, *Welcome to Hell*, remains a cornerstone of the black metal genre, a raw and chaotic explosion of distorted guitars, guttural vocals, and relentless drumming.
