The Damned: the first British punk band to release a single, the first to release an album, and arguably, the only one to evolve consistently without sacrificing their chaotic core. From the breakneck fury of "New Rose" to the gothic grandeur of *The Black Album*, The Damned have been genre-bending disruptors for over four decades. Their sound, initially a raw explosion of proto-punk energy influenced by The Stooges and MC5, soon incorporated elements of psychedelia, progressive rock, and glam, showcasing a musical curiosity that set them apart from their contemporaries. Captain Sensible's melodic sensibility clashed beautifully with Dave Vanian's theatrical vampirism, creating a dynamic tension that fuelled their best work. The release of *Machine Gun Etiquette* in 1979 marked a pivotal shift, solidifying their status as innovators.
