About TEKE::TEKE

TEKE::TEKE is a Montreal-based collective that defies categorization, blending the raw energy of psychedelic rock with the intricate textures of traditional Japanese music. Their sound is a kaleidoscope of shakuhachi flutes, surf guitar riffs, and frenetic brass sections, creating a sonic experience that feels both timeless and avant-garde. Drawing inspiration from 1960s Japanese cinema, garage rock, and enka (a traditional Japanese ballad style), TEKE::TEKE crafts a sound that is as cinematic as it is electrifying. Formed in 2017, the band initially began as a tribute to Japanese guitar legend Takeshi Terauchi but quickly evolved into a genre-defying powerhouse. Their 2021 debut album, *Shirushi*, marked their breakthrough, earning critical acclaim for its bold fusion of styles and theatrical live performances. TEKE::TEKE’s shows are a spectacle of vibrant costumes, choreographed movements, and unrelenting energy, solidifying their reputation as one of the most dynamic acts in contemporary music. Culturally, TEKE::TEKE bridges East and West, paying homage to their Japanese roots while embracing the experimental spirit of Montreal’s indie scene. Their collaborations with artists like Godspeed You! Black Emperor’s Efrim Menuck and their appearances at major festivals such as SXSW and Pop Montreal have further cemented their status as innovators. Currently, TEKE::TEKE is working on new material, promising to push their eclectic sound even further. With their fearless creativity and magnetic stage presence, they continue to redefine what it means to be a truly global band.
